Social

Biggin has a small but vibrant community who have set up their own “Social Committee”.  A small group of individuals meet and organise events throughout the year.

Biggin Social Committee was formed to generate a ‘belonging’ feeling within Biggin – particularly when the Blacksmiths Arms was closed for 5 years. Events created were all based around the family and invited ALL villagers to join in and have fun!

The Children’s Christmas party was a classic – run in the Methodist Chapel at Church Fenton it is full of games, afternoon tea and culminates in Santa’s visit to distribute toys to the children who’ve been eagerly awaiting his arrival. Santa has been several villagers over the years – most recently Paul Turner who appears in a Santa suit made by Jean Hahm.

The Adults’ Christmas party has been held in many places throughout the years. When the Blacksmiths Arms was unable to host a couple of years ago, other venues were sought and the dinner has been held at Sherburn Aero Club and Dintingdales Restaurant.

There have been Easter Egg hunts, Royal Wedding parties, Treasure Hunts, Bonfire parties, Biggin Bake Offs in aid of charity and the village coffers and Summer get togethers, (courtesy of fields loaned from Geoff Smith and Jane and Mark and Maggie and Chris’s garden) with the King and Queen of Biggin (Jessie and Paul Turner) with robes and thrones and fancy dress competitions, running races, ducking stools and lots lots more! Each event has been well attended and great fun. Long may they last.

Biggin also boasts Biggin Bunting!   Each home in Biggin was charged with making a triangle of bunting and hand paint their names, the name of their house, the names of any pets and any other pictures they felt appropriate. This was lovingly sewn together (thanks Jean Hahm) and appears during the summer event wound round trees, fences and bushes.

It is a living history of the village and it would be good to update in 2018.
